Audience Analysis and Media Criticism
Every actor of modern society should be a reflective subject; every audience of mass media should be a critical subject. In this class, we will discuss topics including 1) the representation of social class, gender and ethnicity in modern media, and how these social structures structurize actors or audience; 2) the dilemmas of technology, public sphere, and subjectivity in a transitional era; 3) issues of consumption, reality and virtual, body identity, and globalization that the media face in a post-modern society. This advanced course attempts to help students become a reflective and creative subject with the ability to criticize and to self- interrogate.
