Theories of Mass Communication

Media is a crucial mechanism in modern and postmodern society that not only leads structural transformation but also causes a number of problems. Divided into five sections based on the “SMCRA” model of communication theory, this course applies empiricism, critical theory, and interpretive paradigm to related theories from a problem-oriented approach. During the course of the class students will:
  • Explore current structure of mass media and aspects of communication technology;
  • Discuss the processes of creating and distributing mass media content;
  • Examine the theories of text analysis;
  • Compare the theories of media effects;
  • Analyze the role of audience.
