Theories of Rhetoric

The course will introduce theories and developments of western rhetoric from classical period (5th cent. BCE)  to contemporary period (19th - 20th centuries AD).  The rise of western rhetorical tradition intersected with historical, political and philosophical developments in western society.  Therefore, these contextual elements will be discussed in the class.  The objectives of this course are to enhance students’ sensitivity towards language, to develop students’ reflexive capabilities towards persuasive discourse, and to cultivate students’ skills in critical thinking.
